The preparation, characterization and properties of modified a-Zirconium phosphate (a-ZrP) and their composites were studied. The polypropylene (PP)/organically modified a-zirconium phosphate (O-ZrP) composites were prepared by melt blending of PP and O-ZrP obtained from the reaction of N, N-dimethyloctadecyl amine(DMA) with hydroxyl group in the a-ZrP gallery. XRD results indicated that the d-spacing of O-ZrP were enlarged from 0.8 nm to 2.9 nm compared to pure a-ZrP. XRD traces of PP/O-ZrP composites showed that theβ-type crystals in the composites were observed as result of the addition of O-ZrP, and the content ofβ-type crystals in PP also increased with the increasing of O-ZrP particles. The mechanical properties showed that the tensile strength, maximum bend strength and impact strength of PP/O-ZrP were improved respectively. The nylon 6 (PA6)/APSO-ZrP composites were prepared via melt blending of PA6 with APSO-ZrP modified by aminophenyl-silicone oil(APSO) in ethanol. The microstructure, thermal properties and mechanical properties of composites were investigated. The experimental results indicated that small amount of APSO-ZrP could significantly improve the mechanical property and fire retardancy of PA6. XRD results also indicated that the y-type crystal in PA6 was observed as result of adding of APSO-ZrP particles. The experimental results indicated that the HDT of this composite was significantly enhanced and the OI of composites were increased compared to pure PA6. Also, MFR data showed that the addition of a-ZrP do give the composite excellent flow property. The surfactant, styrene butadiene rubber-g-dimethylamino ethyl methacralate (SBR-g-DM) was synthesized by solution graft and used to modify the compatibility between polystyrene and a-ZrP in the polystyrene(PS)/a-ZrP composites prepared by melt blending. IR, TGA and mechanical properties test were carried out to character the morphology, thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composites. The results showed that SBR were successfully grafted by DM. The thermal stability of the composites was enhanced compared to the virgin PS. The HDT were used to evaluate thermal endurable ability and the results suggested that thermal endurable ability was improved due to the addition of a-ZrP, on the contrary, in the case of SBR-g-DM loading. The mechanical properties testing results indicated that impact strength significantly improved with the increasing loading of SBR-g-DM.
