This research attempts to give a systematic account of research progress at home and abroad on the basis of wetland science and human settlements scientific theories, discussing the effects of wetland influencing human settlements, and from geological point of view, choosing both naturality and frangibility indicators in wetland areas, based on GIS techniques, from regional scale to study the methods of human settlements suitability in wetland areas in China, try to establish a evaluation model of human settlements suitability in wetland areas based on GIS. And taking Dianchi lake basin as an example, from basic database→evaluation index→evaluation model→standard of evaluation, this paper evaluates the suitability of human settlements in Dianchi lake basin comprehensively.The results can reflect both naturality and frangibility characteristics of human settlements suitability in wetland areas in different areas of China, and can quantitatively reveal the spatial regularity of human settlements in different parts of wetland areas. The example shows that, the evaluation can indicate the natural structure and regional differences of human settlements in Dianchi lake basin, possesses better practicability, and can provide the scientific basis and decision support for the coordinated development of both human settlements and wetland environment, and reference for human settlements suitability evaluation in other areas of wetland areas.Meanwhile, with the use of GIS techniques to develop wetland areas human settlements studies, combining with many other sources of information, we can establish a comprehensive wetland areas human settlements information system, as a technology platform and the secondary development tool, to support all aspects of scientific research for human settlements.
