A polymer coating can be coated on papers or plastic film. The polymer coating can be plated by aluminum under vacuum to form an aluminum-plated transfer coating. The plated coating is of distinguished metallic show, stable printability and recyclable environment protection. As well as the surface of the aluminum-plated transfer coating can be fluted by holographic laser technology. The laser figuration on the transfer coating is discernible and anti-imitative that it can be widely used in high-quality packing.Transfer coating plays a key role in aluminum-plated paper and plastic film. An aluminum-plated paper (film) is prepared when the transfer coating is homogenously coated on the PET or BOPP substrates and dried to form an evenly dense coat. The aluminum film will be detached away from substrate when peeling. The solvent-based transfer coating is toxic and harmful to operators. Meanwhile, the volatilization of solvents needs a lot of energy, makes resource waste and pollutes the environment, and causes the safe hidden troubles to producing circumstance. On the other hand, the residual solvent in the coating makes the bad odor. The effect of weather on the volatilization of solvent is serious during coating process. At present time, the solvent-based transfer coating is only utilized in the production of the aluminum-plated transfer coating in domestic plants or in European plants. The use of water-borne transfer coating instead of the solvent-based transfer coating has not been reported yet. The negative effect of solvents on the transfer coating will be eliminated if the environmentally friendly water-borne transfer coating can be used. The substitution not only solves the environmental pollution, but also saves the cost of production and waste of resource. The bad odor will be also solved thoroughly from the transfer coating. The stable water-borne poly(methyl methacrylate) dispersions and polyacrylates emulsions were prepared in this work. By comparison, the polyacrylates emulsions are more suited to be used as transfer coating in practical application. The effect of emulsification of CO-436 emulsifier is superior to that of SDS. The smaller particle size of the emulsion is the better film-forming and properties of the film are. As a water-borne transfer coating, the stable polyacrylates emulsion which is composed of MMA, BA, GMA and MAA, and the weight ration of monomers is 10:9:2:1, and CO-436 as an emulsifier possesses good flowability, film-forming, transparence and peelability. The stable water-borne composite emulsions of polyurethane-acrylates (PUA) were prepared by phase-reversal. The particle size and polydispersity of the water-borne PUA prepared by single polydiol and diisocyanate are smaller and more uniform. The viscosity of the water-borne PUA increases with increasing the particle size. The same particle size of the various PUA emulsions behaves the similar rheological properties. The water-borne PUA behaves the Newtonian flow. The film-forming of the water-borne PUA is better that that of the polyacrylates emulsions. The light transmittance of PUA film is close to that of the solvent-based transfer coatings. The higher content of polyether diol (PPG-220) used in PUA is the smaller Young's modulus, tensile strength and fracture strength of the PUA film are, and the higher elongation at break of the PUA film is. The integrated mechanical properties of the PUA film synthesized from polyester diol (356) and IPDI is better. The PUA prepared by mixture of PC and PTMG diols had a phase-separate structure, and the PUA prepared by polyester diol had not a microphase-separation. The tensile property of the later could be improved by the occurrence of cross-linking in polyacrylates. The surface energy of the water-borne PUA is near to that of the solvent-based transfer coating. The surface property of the PUA can fit to ink printing and aluminum spraying. In light of its good flowability, film-forming, transparence and peelability, the water-borne PUA can be applied as a water-borne transfer coating.
