On today’s architectural coatings market, waterborne coatings have become the main development trend of the coating industry due to its low price, safety, resource and energy saving, and reducing environment pollution. In waterborne coatings, latex paint is one of the non-polluting coatings with multiple types and fastest growing speed. Water-based acrylic emulsion is the most important base of latex paint. The stability of acrylic emulsion is one of the most basic and important performance criteria. It includes emulsion polymerization stability, emulsion storage stability, emulsion Calcium ion stability and emulsion freeze-thaw stability. In this thesis, the stabilities of acrylic emulsion were studied from different aspects of acrylic emulsion design. It included emulsion solid content, neutralizing agent and final emulsion PH value, latex particle size, glass transition temperature, the types of main monomer, polymerizable carboxylic acid and stabilizer monomer, polymer molecular weight and crosslinker, initiator and buffer level and surfactant level and types. The various factors which affect acrylic emulsion stability and mechanisms behind were studied deeply and comprehensively. Reference and suggestions on how to design acrylic emulsion to improve different latex stability were also provided in the thesis.
