Spiropyrans are a class of typical photochromic compounds. Because of the good photallochromy, thermal stability, fastly reading speed, lowly cost, highly sensitivity recording and storage density, spiropyrans were seen photochromic materials and organic optical storage materials.The optical and thermal properties of spiropyran compound can be modified by adjusting the structure of the molecules. Because of this advantages, spiropyrans have become the focus of the study. Spiropyrans are expected to make breakthrough in the preparation of Smart Gels of Low Molar-Mass Organic Gelators.This paper contains two main research purposes. First, by introducing different functional groups to simple spiropyran to synthesize novel spiropyran compounds, which have good photochromic and anti-fatigue properties. We further studied the relationship between the structure and nature of the spiropyran compounds. Second, introducing functional groups which having the potential nature of gelating the organic solvents to the simple spiropyran compounds to synthesize novel Low Molar-Mass Glator. So that can make a breakthrough in the preparation of smart gels of Low Molar-Mass Organic Gelators by spiropyran compounds.In this dissertation, the research work can be divided into tow parts:In the first part, focused on the synthesis and characterization of basic raw material and new spiropyran compounds. In this paper, a new type of spiropyran SP3, SP4, SP5, SP6, SP7, SP8, SP11 and SP12 were synthesized on the basis of the spiropyran SP1 and SP2. And with cholesterol and 3,4,5-tris(hexa-alkoxy)benzoic acid as raw material,we designed and synthesized the novel compounds SP9 and SP10. The target compounds reported in this literature are all new compounds. Their molecular structures are confirmed by IR, 1HNMR, MS and elemental analysis etc.The second part focused on researching the properties of the novel spiropyran compounds. The spectra properties, pH sensitivety, and heat sensitivety of the compounds SP1,SP3,SP4,SP5,SP6,SP7,SP8,SP11 and SP12 are studied. More comprehensive and in-depth study on the impaction of the metal ions, solvent polarity, and the functional groups to the spectra properties and fading rate. It is found that these new novel spiropyran compound has good photochromism and its photochromism was effected with their structures, solvent polarity and metal ions. We also test the gel nature of the new spiropyran compounds. It is found that spiropyran compound SP6,SP9 and SP10 can gel organic solvent, such as: Ethylenediamine to form heat reversible gel.
