In order to improve the continuous casting efficiency and meet the requirement of high qualitative and high pure steel, the metallurgist has taken a serious action on strengthening and enlarging the tundish metallurgical function in recent years. One of the important measures was that the appropriate flow control devices were installed to improve the flow pattern, which not only made the inclusions well floated but also created the advantageous condition to uniform the liquid steel temperature.In this paper, according to the situation of two strand slab tundish at Chuangwei Iron and Steel Company, the mathematical and Physical simulation method were used to choose the best flow control device. The experiment model, which was 1/3 times of the prototype and was made of plexiglass, was built. The experiments were done based on the Froude equality principle. The mathematical model, describing the flow phenomena in the tundish, was established according as the continuity equation, momentum equation, turbulence energy and turbulence energy dissipation equation, meanwhile the Fluent commercial software was used to calculate.The molten steel velocity distributions in the tundish was simulated by computer, it was found that the turbulence inhibitor can help form reasonable flow pattern, improve the fluid flow characteristics. In the tundish with barricade and dam, when adding turbulence inhibitor, the minimum residence time are increased by 550%, the average residence time are increased by 19.7% and dead zone volume decreases by 59.1%. It also found in the experiment that a simple dam cannot improve the flow field of the fluid effective. When together with the dam and turbulence inhibitor, the minimum residence time of the molten steel in tundish increased by 500%, the average residence time increased by 27.4% and dead zone volume decreased by 77.3%. Comparing the residence curve time and flow pattern of fluid in tundish with different flow control devices, it can be found that the flow control devices of dam and turbulence inhibitor is better than that of barricade, dam and turbulence inhibitor.The moving condition of inclusion in tundish was also explored. The removal condition in different control flow system was simulated by physical experiment. And the moving trace of the inclusion particles, diameter of them was 10μm,50μm,and 100μm, were drew by mathematical simulation. The result shows that the inclusion particles with the diameter of 50μm and 100μm could float well in tundish with turbulence inhibitor. Among all the flow control devices, the flow control device of a dam and turbulence inhibitor has the best effect.
