CNC machine tools is one of the most important machining equipment due to its high-speed processing, high-precision, high efficiency and high reliability, and it is widely used in manufacturing enterprises at home and abroad. It is very significant for the upper manufacturing systems and producing management systems to know the on-site machining progress information of the workpieces in time, in order to optimize and organize the process of production management effectively, improve processing efficiency, and support dynamic optimal schedule.This paper discusses research significance and research status of machining progress information collection of the workpieces and usage limitations of the current method of machining progress information collection. The current method of collecting machining progress information of the workpieces, which is mainly for mass, short working hours machining, calculates the numbers of completed workpieces. It does not work when it meets the single, long working hours machining, such as the machining of mold, large workpieces, so a new method that could obtain more detailed machining progress information is needed. Therefore, the research on numerical control (NC) machining progress information extraction is the main line of this paper, on which the extraction machining progress information for the single-piece machining is studied.Secondly, the paper analyzes the NC program and studies the characteristics of NC machining, and a new method of NC machining progress information collection based on Macro Instruction is presented. It is suitable for the NC systems with external communication Macro Instruction, such as FANUC, HAAS CNC systems. The machining progress information are reported automatically through Macro Instruction after NC machining started, including the machine number, the program number, the process number, the used time of the current process, the total number of working steps, the current process-step number, the used time of the current process-step, machining precision and the number statistics of completed workpieces and so on.Again, a NC machining progress information acquisition system is developed based on the research above. The overall system architecture, hardware selection, software structure and related supporting technology are introduced, and the main modules of the software are shown in details, including two parts, the program modules of server-side and the program modules of terminal, such as server-side module of embedding machining progress information in NC program, terminal communication conversion module.Finally, the machining progress information collection of NC machining is achieved in a CNC machining workshop, and a case study shows that the method of NC machining progress information collection based on Macro Instruction is practical.
