In this paper, it was concerned about the polymerization of terpene andα-methylstyrene from the material of turpentine andα-methylstyrene. And the appropriate polymerization conditions were particularly discussed. Then a suitable antioxidant was selected that madeα-methylstyrene modified terpene resin light-colored. Finally, the modified terpene resin was used in hot-melt pressure sensitive adhesive (HMPSA) and reviewed the effect on the property of HMPSA. The main contents and conclusions of this paper are listed as follows:1,A copolymerization ofα-pinene andα-methylstyrene was synthesized fromα-pinene andα-methylstyrene. The suitable copolymerization conditions were confirmed by studying about the effects on copolymer reaction:the mol ratio ofα-pinene toα-methylstyrene 3:1, the amount of catalyst AlCl3 6%, the amount of catalyst SC1 1.2%, reaction temperature -10~-15℃, reaction time 4h. The properties of the copolymerization ofα-pinene andα-methylstyrene are softening point 108.3℃, yield 80.7%, color of Gardner 7. From the GPC, the weight-average molecular weight M w is 1242.2,After the studying of different antioxidant systems, we found that the result of antioxidant systems with antioxidant A (1.0%) and PS-10 (0.3%) was the best. We successfully reduced the color of copolymerization ofα-pinene andα-methylstyrene from Gardner 7 to 4.3,From mixture ofα-pinene andβ-pinene (7:3) that was called (α+β) pinene andα-methylstyrene, a copolymerization of (α+β) pinene andα-methylstyrene with high softening point was synthesized. Through the orthogonal experiment, the suitable copolymerization conditions were confirmed: the mol ratio of (α+β) pinene toα-methylstyrene 7:3, the amount of catalyst AlCl3 5%, the amount of catalyst SC1 1.2%, reaction temperature -5℃. Using this process conditions, repeated three experiments and the average of results are: softening point 128.3℃, yield 82.9%, color of Gardner 7. From the GPC, the weight-average molecular weight M w is 2573.4,As tackifying resin the modified resin was used in HMPSA. The initial tack, melt viscosity and 180°PIW of HMPSA all exceed requirements of adhesive in tags. So, the modified terpene resins can be widely used in all kinds of adhesive tape of HMPSA.
