Surface polishing using abrasive water jet technology is developed on the basis of the abrasive water jet machining technology. It involves fluid mechanics, surface treatment technology and is a new intensive processing technology. As a new type of precision polishing technology, surface polishing using abrasive water jet has unique advantages, such as polishing hard-polishing materials etc.Based on the theory of abrasive water jet, surface polishing using abrasive water jet techniques was studied in detail. A model of surface polishing using abrasive water jet was established.Theoretical study shows that there are four model for abrasive water jet to remove material,i.e direct deformation,stress wave propagation,lateral jetting,hydraulic static penetration respectively. When abrasive water jet erosion surface,flexible plastic shear erosion process between the abrasive particles and workpiece surface, i.e sliding friction, plowing and micro machining.Analysis shows that on the workpiece surface roughness is mainly affected by jet pressure,target distance,spray angle,abrasive size,abrasive concentration and distribution as well as process parameters.The basic section of abrasive water jet is more favorable for the workpiece polishing.Because the workpiece materials to be polished is too much,the parameters of polishing process is complicated.Therefore, orthogonal experiment is adopted to study the impact of polishing process parameters on the quality of polishing.The study shows that spray angle and injection pressure has highly significant effect on the workpiece surface roughness; target distance from the workpiece has effect on surface roughness to a certain extent; abrasive concentration has no significant effect on surface roughness of the workpiece. The optimum combination is abrasive concentration(1:2),spray angle9(30°),jet pressure(4Mpa),target distance(10mm).The mold steel 4Cr5MoSiV1 surface polishing using micro abrasive water jet was experimentally studied. The results show that abrasive water jet polishing surface has a good effect and can improve the surface hardness,surface fatigue strength. The lower the surface hardness,more obvious the effect. The study also showed that when application of micro abrasive water jet polishing surface, the abrasive fluid, polishing time, and the workpiece material as well as the original surface roughness have a major impact on the polishing effect. In order to improve accuracy and efficiency of polishing, higher concentration of abrasive larger particle diameter and liquid abrasive additives should be adopt for the higher surface hardness; for the lower surface hardness, less abrasive in diameter and the additive concentration, lower abrasive liquid should be used. For the lower hardness of the surface, use slurry abrasive with wax-coated particles can reduce the polishing time and improve the accuracy of the surface polishing.Study on surface polishing technology using micro abrasive water jet has great academic meaning and application value.It has wide application market.
