For the reasonable control of mining roadway with thin limestone roof in Liyan coalmine, surrounding rock control technology, including defining limestone roof critical safety thickness and roadway control measures, is studied systematically in this paper based on theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field observation. According to the surrounding rock destruction range, roof stress distribution and deformation, main influencing factors of limestone roof stability are analyzed. The main influencing factors include limestone thickness and strength, overburden combination form and lithology, roadway width and so on. Systematic research is done to define the critical safety thickness of limestone roof. Based on the actual situation of Liyan coalmine, the critical safety thickness of limestone roof with different situation is defined. According to rock combination form, mining roadway with thin limestone roof is classified into different sorts. In this paper, deformation and failure character of surrounding is concluded. At the same time failure mechanism of surrounding rock are studied. In addition the basic forms of deformation and failure of surrounding rock with thin limestone roof is summarized. Surrounding rock control measures of roadway with thin limestone roof are proposed in this paper. Also the field observation, which is done in 17304 roadway of Liyan coalmine, proved that the effect of surrounding rock control is fairly good and supporting parameters is reasonable. The study result of this paper has great scientific significance and application prospects to the critical safety thickness defining of limestone roof and reasonable control of roadway surrounding rock.
