Now it is confronted with the dual task of developing the economy and protecting the environment. Proceeding from its national conditions, Sri Lanka has, in the process of promoting its overall modernization program, made environmental protection one of its basic national policies, regarded the realization of sustainable development as an important strategy and carried out throughout the country large-scale measures for pollution prevention and control as well as ecological environment protection.Sri Lanka has adhered to environmental protection as one of State policies and implemented the strategy of invigorating Sri Lanka through science and education and the strategy of sustainable development in order to facilitate harmonious development of the economy, society and environment when Sri Lanka is experiencing rapid economic growth. In the new century, Sri Lanka remains its strong momentum in economic growth leading to more striking contradictions and tension among the environment, resources and economic development. Taking the improvement of environmental quality and strengthening the capacity in sustainable development as one of the important goals for building Sri Lanka into a well-off society in an all round way, the Sri Lankan Government is determined to solve environmental problems during the development. Environmental protection is that human beings protect natural resources consciously and make them reasonable use to prevent the pollution and destruction from the natural environment; also they do comprehensive management to the polluted and destroyed environment to create an environment that is suitable for people's living and working.
