Influences Of Imidazolium-based Ionic Liquids On Structures And Properties Of IPP/Imi-ILs Blends

In this paper, the traditional imidazolium ionic liquids (Imi-ILs), 1-n-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C12MIM][Br]), and 1-n-octadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C18MIM][Br]) were incorporated into iPP to prepare iPP/Imi-ILs blends by melt-blending. For comparison, the iPP/Imi-ILs blends were also prepared by iPP and the functional Imi-Ils, 1-n-tetradecyl-3-carboxymethyl imidazolium chloride ([C14cim]C1), 1-n-TCEP-3-methylimidazolium chloride [TCEPMIM][C1], 1-ethoxyethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [EOEMIm][BF4], and 1-ethoxycarbonylethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [AOEMIm][BF4]. The dispersion of Imi-ILs in the iPP matrixes and the compatibility between Imi-ILs and iPP were studied. The influences of Imi-ILs on the iPP chains movement and its structure evolution during the melting and cooling processes were also investigated. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of iPP were tested.The main conclusions obtained are as following:1. When the dosage of [C12MIM][Br] was below 3phr, it has good compatibility with iPP, and shows plasticizing effects. In the cooling process, it can induce the formation of a and 13 crystals, but nucleating efficiency of [C12MIM][Br] is low. Moreover, [C12MIM][Br] can improve the impact properties, thermal stability and antistatic properties of iPP.[C18MIM][Br] exhibits a better plasticization effect to iPP in comparing to [C12MIM][Br] with the same dosage. Because of a stronger interaction between its long alkyl chains and iPP, it provides to iPP a high impact performance. At the same time, [C18MIM][Br] can induce the formation of a-crystal and increase the thermal stability and antistatic properties of iPP.2. [C14CIM][C1] has good compatility with iPP as the dosage is below 5phr, and it can promote the formation of a-crystal. [C14CIM][C1] displays high nucleating efficiency and significant plasticizing effect. Thermal stability, mechanical and antistatic properties of iPP/[C14CIM][C1] blends are also improved.[TCEPMIM][C1] can enhance the thermal stability of iPP obviously, improve the initial degradation temperature and the maximum decomposition temperature, and increase the residue quantity increase. However, compared with [C14CIM][C1], [TCEPMIM][C1] with the same dosage has poor dispersion in iPP matrix, therefore, other properties of iPP improve slightly.[EOEMIM][BF4] can induce the formation of a andβcrystals. Compared to other Imi-ILs,iPP/1phr [EOEMIM][BF4] blends have higher nucleating efficiency. Since someβ-crystals are generated, blends show obtain better mechanical properties, that is the tensile properties are kept and the impact strength is increased. Furthermore, other performance of iPP also improves.Compared with [C14CIM][C1], [AOEMIM][BF4] the same dosage with exhibits a similar plasticization effect, and it can improve the thermal stability, antistatic properties of iPP and its crystallinity. The main role of [AOEMIM] [BF4] is to improve the tensile properties and impact properties of iPP simultaneously, providey excellent mechanical properties.
