As the major achievement of this thesis, a plug-in application for optimal pipeline designing and routing based on the mathematical theory of network flow programming and seamlessly fused with the open source geographical information system, Map Window, has been designed and implemented for serving the needs from oil industry for an effective and efficient tool to aid the planning and management of surface and/or subsurface pipeline network. Due to the powerful and flexible functionality provided in the plug-in interface for built in Map Window system, a series of simulation models were successfully implemented, including pipeline profile finder, cost modeling, network flow programming. At present, these kind of functions can only be found in a few commercial GIS software. In the thesis, we also dig into the state-of-the-art technology for 3D modeling and GIS system, and make a trial to construct 3D representation from original 2D data by 3D modeling technology, to present the 3D representation on the Internet by the aid of the combination of technologies provided in GeoServer, SketchUp and Google Earth. It is the first trial to serve the purpose of, and to dig out the potential of, managing the complicated local details of various pipeline layouts in a building or in the subsurface on the Web in the future.Below are the main achievements of the work in the process of preparing the thesis:1. Design of entity-relationship model for the optimal pipeline routing and management system, and implementation of its corresponding database2. Based on the open source GSI software, MapWindow, the optimal pipeline routing system is implemented as its plug-in, and the seamless fusion of GIS and the sophistigated modeling functionality is realized.3. A framework, including modeling and procedures for operation, of combining Geoserver, Sketchup, Google Earth to extend data representation from 2D to 3D is analyzed, and the potential application in 3D representation of details of the pipeline layout in a building is is discussed. In this thesis, a sustainable extensible framework for optimal pipeline design and management in oil fields, and a basic platform for rapid modeling and deploying relevant data in 3D have been implemented.
