As low carbon city become one hot topic over the world, it is urgent to establish a standard and unified carbon accounting methodology for evaluating carbon reduction potentials and comparing carbon emission levels among various cities. This study established a city-scale carbon accounting system based on 6 sectors in the city, which include industrial energy consumption, transport energy consumption, household energy consumption, commercial energy consumption, industrial processes and waste. Nanjing city was then selected as a case to analyze the characteristics of carbon emission in the cities in China. The results show that, the largest three GHG contributors in Nanjing are industry energy consumption sector, industry process sector and transport energy consumption sector, which contribute 69%,30%and 11%to the total GHG emissions. On the basis of Nanjing carbon emission, screen out primary energy source consumption sector, industrial process sector and transport energy consumption sector carbon emissions, divided into industrial point source, Life non-point source and transport energy consumption carbon emissions three categories. Industrial point source including industrial energy consumption (not including electricity), industrial process produces; Life non-point source including household energy consumption; The transport energy consumption including transport energy consumption sector carbon emissions. Then choose Nanjing GDP, population, network density as substitution parameters, adopting spatial interpolation method on emissions, it is concluded that the spatial distribution list of Nanjing industrial point source, Life non-point source greenhouse carbon emissions mainly focus on industry developed, densely populated Nanjing central regions, including XiaGuan, JianYe, QiXia, QinHuai, XuanWu, and GuLou six regional. But LiuHe, PuKou, JiangNing, LiShui, GaoChun due to the geographical position relatively remote, industrial, society, economy is relatively undeveloped, so total carbon emissions are relatively few. Nanjing traffic carbon emissions mainly focus on bigger, and traffic network density, and some larger districts without road traffic or network density, smaller areas, traffic has lower carbon emissions.
