In this paper, an automatic coal sampling machine is designed, which can take and prepare samples for commercial coal and coal pile.Firstly, present the preliminary design of the sampling arm according to the the design requirements, using related theories to design the sampling arm and rotating mechanism; and make optimization analysis of the size of the sampling arm combined with powerful computing capabilities of MATLAB.Secondly, analysis the static of the sampling arm with ANSYS, including strength, stiffness and stability. Study shows that there is a great margin of the stiffness and strength of the sampling arm, which provid a background and contents of the project for structural optimization with modern design theory. Finally, creat the parametric modeling of the sampling arm with the optimizational function of ANSYS. The objective function is the quality of the sampling arm, the design variable is the thickness of the sampling arm, the constraint is the allowable stress and maximum deflection. After that, a more reasonable geometry has been created after structural optimization, the strength, stiffness and stability for optimized structure has been checked, and the feasibility of optimization results has been verified. In this paper, an optimal design of the structure of the sampling arm has been made with ANSYS, which saves a lot of manpower and resources, shortens the design cycle of production, improves work efficiency, and has a very important value for the actual project. The finite element analysis and optimal design of the sampling arm provides an important theoretical basis and reference value for the same product design and engineering problems.
