Casting is one of the important basic industries. For a long time, the casting process is complex and there are many factors that affect the casting quality. All of these have seriously hampered the development of casting technology. Nevertheless, in recent years, the applications of computer technology in the casting are more and more widely, especially CAD and CAE technology. CAD technology has greatly improved the efficiency of product design and optimized the process design; and CAE technology has provided a strong support for the verification of process reliability, shorten the production cycle of the casting, reduced production costs, saved raw materials and energy. However, CAD and CAE have been separated from each other all the time. Based on such background, this paper conducts research on optimal riser design of steel casting based on the isolated liquid region (ISL) by coupling CAD and CAE.Firstly, this paper analyzes the current status and development trend of casting technology CAD, CAE and optimal riser design both at home and abroad. Considering the casting process theory, the optimal riser design system of steel casting based on the isolated liquid region is developed, using the secondary development API interface UG/Open provided by UG and VC++6.0 development tools.Secondly, the system is designed with the method of modularization and is one part of the whole optimization system. Some key technologies for the system development such as the ways and selection of the standard parts library's establishment, ODBC database technology and data storage and transmission between modules are intensively discussed and researched in this paper. The paper also detailly introduced particular design theory and program development process of two main modules. Lastly, the application of the whole system is shown through a real casting and its casting experiment.In this paper, the three core parts are displaying the isolated liquid regions of casting in casting model, the establishment of the risers standard parts library and riser design according to information of ISLs. They are independent of each other, but constitute an interrelated whole at the same time.In this paper, the system can provide strong support for optimal riser design of steel casting and generate the information of the initial riser for the whole optimization system.
