Blank design has very great influence over the the final quality of sheet metal forming process, for its upstream position in the process pipeline. Traditional blank design method is commonly based on projection mapping principle which takes no account of mechnic in the process. Therefore only simple sheet metal parts can be designed by that way. In view of the above problem, finite element inverse approach is introduced into blank design. Based on total strain theory, this approach significantly upgrade the precision of calculation. The thesis comprehensivly indroduced the algorithm of finite element inverse approach. For the application in practice, a computer program was developed based on the theory, and low efforts were made for the convenience of employing. One is the program of calcuation was intergrated in CATIA, the well-known CAD application which widly used in aircraft industry, achived by using CAA, the redevolopment framework for CATIA, programed in C++ language. Using 3D graphic to represent data generate by calculation is another effort which visualized all abstract data such as thickness spread. This is mainly programed in C# language. based on XNA framework. HLSL language was used to directly program the graphic adapter hardware to made outstanding visual effect and high framerate.
