Wet-laid technology is derived from traditional paper industry and is one of the important processes of it, wet-laid technology has been applied to the fields of nonwovens by improving the production process. With the increasing demand of products, synthetic fiber is being widely used in production since the traditional natural fiber can not meet the technical requirements of functional nonwoven products. With a variety of performance and structural advantages, synthetic fiber has gradually expanded the scope of application in the paper and wet-laid nonwovens. However, the hydrophobic properties of synthetic fiber, dispersion, characterization methods, the matching process, the development and application of new products have been restricting the expansion of wet laid nonwovens. The mechanism of wet-laid processing with special reference to Polyester Staple Fiber as major raw material is studied in this thesis. The factors affecting the dispersion quality of wet-web are analyzed by various dispersion and characterization method. Based on a lot of market and technology researches, literature inquiries and international communications, this paper focuses on four aspects:The first is to analyze the dispersion mechanism and methods of fiber dispersed in water. The second is to comparatively study the effects of several dispersants and concentrations have on the distribution uniformity of fiber dispersion in water on the basis of dispersion mechanism. Third, characterization differences of fiber dispersion evenness is discussed, and the steady method was choosing for future study. Last, the wet-laid thermo-bonded nonwovens products are developed and their properties are tested. All the results obtained will be of benefit to better understanding the processing and machine design.(1) Image analysis characterization, compared with traditional fiber dispersion characterization method, has certain advantages in quota measurement, reduction of external interferences. Firstly, error of quadrat analysis caused by experimental conditions is small, and the characterization results are more stable. Secondly, the increase of dispersant concentration, the mixing speed and time, which have certain critical value, will not always improve fiber uniformity.(2) By comparing the surface morphology of fiber webs formed in different dispersion methods, we can see that turbulence produced by mechanical stirring makes the fiber deposit on the fiber curtain, and a vortex is formed in the stirring direction. Using bubble to disperse the fiber can get randomly arranged fibers and more uniformly distributed fiber webs.(3) Compared with other dispersant, CMC, concentration of 0.1%, can endowed the sample with better mechanical properties, and fluctuation of the results were small. However, its residue limits the application of wed-laid & thermo-bonding nonwovens in other fields. In this paper, we studies the dispersion of polyester fiber in water and preparation condition of wet-laid nonwovens. It has profound reference for further research, and provides theoretical bases for industrial production.
