Vertical anaerobic baffled reactor (VABR) is a kind of new high-efficient anaerobic reactor,which was developed based on Internal circulation reactor(IC) ,ABR and Upflow staged sludge bed(USSB).The main results obtained were as follows:1,Performance analysis of the small-scale VABR was studied in the lab.In the test,the substrate was glucose and anaerobic granular sludge was inoculated into the experimental reactor.1) The start-up and operational characteristics of VABR were studied.The experimental results was indicated that the start-up of the reactor can be completed in a short time.When the VLR,influent COD and HRT were 35 kgCOD/(m3·d),20000mg/L and 14h,the COD removal was still above 85%.Whereas severe acidification took place in the reactor and COD removal dropped significantly,when VLR was increasd to 40.2 kgCOD/(m3·d).2) The effects of influence factor such as VLR,influent COD and pH on the treatment performance were also studied,and the experimental results indicated that VLR was an important factor influencing COD removal.It was founded that COD removal reduced at the beginning of increasing VLR. And the influent COD change had little influence on the reactor performance under the same VLR. The best influent pH of the reactor was about 8.5 under the condition of high VLR(30 kgCOD/(m3·d)).3) The variation of COD,pH and VFA of different compartments along the reactor height during three conditions were investigated. The variation laws of COD,pH and VFA were alike. It indicated that the VABR was a plug flow reactor.4) Physical characteristics of granular sludge were also investigated. The experimental results indicated that the granular size was very different in the different compartments,and the larger the granular size is, the more rapid the granule settle. It was founded that the settling velocity of granules which in the same size extent from different samples were close.5)The riser pipe is easy to be blocked,because it is rather small. 2 Performance analysis of the pilot-scale VABR was studied in the site.In the test,the treated object was the effluent from ion exchange resin industry.1) The effluent from ion exchange resin industry was treated by using VABR at about 35℃. When the VLR and HRT were 6~7 kgCOD/(m3·d) and 24h,the COD removal was about 70~75% stably.2) The influence of sulfate was relatively large to the anaerobic system.3) The phenomenon of riser pipe block in lab-scale was rarely appearance.3 The treatment of wastewater from ketene dimer industry was studied by using a full-scale VABR.1) The the effluent from ketene dimer industry was treated by using VABR at about 35℃. When the VLR was 3~4 kgCOD/(m3·d),the COD removal was about 75~85% stably.2) The VABR had a large buffering capacity of influent pH variation.3) The experimental results of secondary start-up indicated that it could be recovered in a short time.
