With the constant increase of the mining depth, it is difficult to support the soft coal roadway. Through experimental research, numerical simulation and industry practice, reasonable arrangement and support technology for roadway in the thick soft seam in Jiaoxue No.2 Coal Mine were studied in this paper. The coal seam roof is made of medium sandstone. The floor which has relatively growing fracture is made of sandy mudstone. The roadway surrounding rock belongs to typeⅣ, which means the surrounding rock is unstable. The displacement, stress and plastic zone of surrounding rock were analyzed when the roadway was driven along roof and along floor. It is shown that the center of roadway top and the floor corners are the key points to control, and the roadway along floor is better than along roof. Compared with the roadway along roof, the roof-to-floor convergence reduces by 18.2%, the side-to-side convergence reduces by 2.4% and the floor heave reduces by 60%. In the industrial practice, the roadway was arranged along floor, and the compound supporting system consisting of bolt, cable, mesh and steel shed was used. The bolt spacing and cable spacing were 800 mm×800 mm and 1600 mm×800 mm, respectively. The surrounding rock was effectively controlled.
