This paper analyses the landscape pattern of green space and its ecological benefits for major universities in Hefei, based on principles of landscape ecology and of landscape design. We also compare landscapecharacteristics and trends of campus planning for universities built in different years from the perspective of landscape planning and design. In addition to present detailed theory analysis and comparison, this article provides some useful advices accordingly for building program of local universities to explore the best pattern of university campus landscape. The main studies the as follow.1. Analysis of landscape patternBased on field surveys and aerial images analysis, this paper has applied ERDAS, CAD, PHOTOSHOP software were applied to calculate and analyze green space landscape pattern indicators and layout characteristics of major universities in Hefei such as: Anhui University (old and new campuses), Hefei University of Technology (new and old campuses), Anhui Agricultural University (old campus), University of Science and Technology of China (east and west campuses) and the South Campus of the Anhui University of Architecture. The results showed that The both green land percentage and tree canopy coverage of the university campus established in 1950s, such as the old campuses of Anhui University, Hefei University of Technology and Anhui Agricultural University reache to the highest, 60.1% and 35.9% for average respectively; But university established at the beginning of this century, which is composed of New campuses of Anhui University and Hefei University of Technology, south campus of Anhui University of Architecture occupy 47% of green land percentage and 14.2% of tree canopy coverage, both are the lowest level. This result indicated there is a trend, the campus build in later year has less green land as camparied with that buil in earlier year. The analysis of the road system and its pattern indicates that in generally the earlier built campus did not achieve the planning of vehicles-line separation, so road congestion occurs frequently during the peak time. However, the road planning of new campus is more reasonable ans logistical. It provides an effective and efficient way to solve the road congestion problem. We summarize that there duplication of building construction and waste of resources problems existed in the overall layout of the old campus, and the planning of new campuses demonstrate more reasonable and optimized, the planning feature for university campus has transformen from follwing the former Soviet model to the diversification pattern.2. Ecological benefit of geen land at selected university campuses This article selects some Hefei Universities built in different years as typical experimental area, such as: old campus of Anhui University (1956), East campus of China University of Technology (1970), west campus of China University of Technology (1986), new campus of Anhui University (2003) and provides an integrated analysis of ecological benefits of green land at selected campus based on the application of CITY-green and aerial images map, which is combined with field survey data to establish information system database of green spaces at campuses. The results suggested that old campus of Anhui University arise the maximum value of ecological benefits for green land, which is account of 4,396,088.1 Yuan. East campus of China University of Technology built in the 70's of the last century takes the second position of 10,990,21.8 Yuan, which is followed by west campus in China University of Technology established in the 80's which is 269,977.6 Yuan. Minimum value of 551,620.3 Yuan is taken by the new campus of Anhui University which is built at the beginning of this century. The main reason is large numbers of various old arbor species in the old campus of Anhui University .However, although diversification of types and quantities, majority of species in the new campus are transplanted and generally low age results relatively low ecological benefits.
