Operation and maintenance management of bus fleet involves transit route design, vehicle sizing, analytic of required capacity to deliver passengers, operation and maintenance scheduling, maintenance policies, and inventory management, etc. With the impact of maintenance policies, the fleet performs the operational reliability. This thesis carries of a preliminary explor for the required capacity to deliver passengers and the operational reliability of a bus fleet. In public transport, required capacity to deliver passengers is an important input of operational scheduling. We give its definition and propose an analytic model to represent it. The model is a superposition of three parts. One part deals with the required capacity in off-peak hours and the other two parts represents the required capacities in morning and evening peak hours. A case study is included to illustrate how the model parameters are determined. A comparative analysis between the required and actual capacities is carried out to show the usefulness of the proposed model. The result shows that the actual headway is controlled by traffic condition, and the actually supplied capacity does not match the required capacity. In a given maintenance policy, the observed failure usually represents the operational reliability. We use the cumulative failure number as a condition variable to model the operational reliability, and evaluate the health level of a bus fleet. We use a general path model to represent the degradation process of items population. For a given time, the cumulative failure number is modeled by a discrete Weibull distribution. We use the flied data to model the operational reliability of r bus fleet, an optimal cumulative failure number before an overhaul is determined, and a graphical tool is developed to monitor the health level of a bus.we also use the cumulative repair cost as a condition variable to evaluate the health level of a bus fleet. The power-law model used in modelling operational reliability represents the average failure behavior. The failure data also is a time-series data. We use the auto-regression model to model the cumulative failure number. We find the auto-regression model can describe the dynamic changes; when the auto-regression model is used to short-term prediction, it has a higher accuracy.
