With the development of China's power system, especially the appearance and extension of large-scale interconnected power system, the small signal stability is becoming a main problem. The weak connection between sub-systems leads to oscillation and dynamic instability of the interconnected power system particularly during the initial period of interconnected power system. In order to meet the present situation and requirement of power system small signal stability analysis, the calculation method, program development and engineering applications of eigenvalue sensitivity are deeply researched. The main work and conclusions of this study are summarized as follows:(1)The basic theory and application status of eigenvalue sensitivity method are researched. The effects of eigenvalue sensitivity on directing location of power system components, design of control system parameters, verification of system mathematical models, adjustment of system operation modes, and assistant decision-making, etc. are analyzed.(2) The principles, characteristics and calculation methods of eigenvalue sensitivity are researched, including component parameter sensitivity, functional sensitivity and operating parameter sensitivity. Based on the widely used PSD-SSAP power system small signal stability analysis software, the program of eigenvalue sensitivity calculation is developed in order to provide simulation tools for applications.(3)The algorithm of functional sensitivity has been improved, it is calculated under the full-dimensional form according to the program features and model treatments. So the method makes calculation more rapid and flexible by simplifying the complex process of original method which needs to deal with the model reduction.(4)The conclusions of this study have been verified, according to the calculation and analysis on large-scale practical power system using eigenvalue sensitivity function which is newly developed.
