Expressway connecting cities, transportation hubs, other important nodes and undertaking regional, interprovincial, interurban transportation, is the highest level main channel and indispensable constituent in network. Expressway is the first level of traffic observation station layout, which promotes economic and social development, safeguards national security, serves the sustainable development. Through collecting vehicle speed, traffic density, traffic flow, axle load an so on, expressway traffic survey provides information support for prophase plan, construction, anaphase maintenance, management, public trip and emergency treatment. At present, our country expressway traffic survey work does not march its construction development, which is unable to reflect the expressway network condition accurately and satisfy expressway plan, construction, maintenance, and management need.The article summarizes the domestic and foreign traffic survey work development history and present layout situation contrastively, analyzes the question existing in our country expressway traffic layout work and traffic observation station layout necessity; analyzes station layout influence factor, divides traffic observation station into continuous traffic observation station and interval traffic observation station according to different user requirement and investigation content, determines the basic principle and guideline of traffic observation station layout; carries on two kinds of traffic observation station layout using fuzzy clustering analysis and traffic flow state appraisal model; finally demonstrates traffic observation station layout of Hubei province expressway network.The article research educes layout methods of continuous traffic observation station and interval traffic observation station:based on existing expressway continuous observation station data, carries on continuous traffic observation station layout using fuzzy clustering method for analyzing comparability of traffic flow characteristics and change rule among observation stations, using node importance thought for analyzing continuous traffic observation station importance, considering traffic observation stations combination and filtration comprehensively referring to layout principle; on the base of traffic flow theory, carries on interval traffic observation station layout using traffic flow state appraisal model. The article research method is easy and feasible, which is the exploration of our country traffic observation station layout.
