Paper pump is the main pulp transportation machinery in the paper and pulp industry and it plays a very important role in the process of paper manufacture. With the increasing shortage of energy, the development of paper pump with higher performance is important, to make the paper pump have better performance, it is very useful to analyze its internal flow. In recent years, with the great development of computer technology, CFD has been widely used in the analysis and design of fluid machinery and provides a great convenience to our work. In this paper, the internal single-phase flow in the centrifugal paper pump with open-impeller has been simulated, the following works have been studied.Firstly the flow characteristics and mechanical properties of pulp and some CFD theories are briefly introduced, and then based on RANS equations and RNGκ-εturbulence model, a numerical simulation method for the centrifugal paper pump with open-impeller is developed by using the finite volume method and SIMPLEC algorithm.Secondly a three-dimensional solid model of the centrifugal paper pump with open-impeller is established and the grid of computational domain structure is generated by appropriate grid generation technology. Based on the given numerical simulation method the internal single-phase flow at six different operating conditions has been simulated by commercial CFD software and the performance curves of the paper pump are given according to the results of calculation. The comparison of simulation results with the experiment shows that the numerical method is reliable and can be used to the analysis of the internal flow in the centrifugal paper pump with open-impeller. And then according to the simulation results, the distribution of pressure and velocity, the characteristics of internal flow such as secondary flow, swirl and separated flow are analyzed, it is useful for the improvement of the design and performance of centrifugal paper pump.Finally, the internal flow in the optimal paper pump model is determined and simulated. Comparison with the original paper pump, the velocity and pressure distribution of the flow are improved, the performance is noticeable increased.
