| Expressway service areas act as the only window for outside exchange on the highways, how to express the concept of safety, safety and how to highlight regional characters are not only the common concerns of the community, but also the requirements of social economic development and civilizational progress. It is an urgent demand to build green, environmental and fashionable service areas. After 20 years of development, the design of highway service basically set a formulary. However, immaturity and unreason of design concept and design techniques directly affects China's highway development and service areas'operation, and also influence economic development and social progress of the regional areas along the highway. The formulation of current situation lies in people's neglect of the important form that service areas can act as regional architecture when they were built, and the ignorance of regional architectures' uniqueness, identifiability and unsubstitutability. Due to lack of good treatment of geographical, cultural and ethnic differences, service areas look monotonous without new ideas from the appearance and merely function as the general parking stations, canteens, gas stations and maintenance depots, which cannot satisfy various demands. In such service areas, people cannot see the splendor of natural geographical scenery, nor can they experience diverse regional customs. The design deficiency of individuation for service areas makes it impossible to arouse sense of Identity. This paper begins with the analysis of regional characteristics, and gives a profound discussion on how to integrate regional characteristics into service areas. The first chapter demonstrates the main contents of this article, domestic and international research status, the existing deficiency of current study, the framework of this article and finally the significance of service area design integrated with regional characteristics. The second chapter mainly investigates parts of highway service areas with concentration on the architecture style, landscape, and layout of the service areas. It also concludes the current situation and proposed trends of service areas' development, which laid the foundation for the following chapters. The third chapter discusses the theoretical guidance of service areas with regional characteristics, such as design innovation, design technologies and the analysis of specific issues of service areas, and thereby provides a theoretical basis for the following contents. The fourth chapter presents the diversity of service area design, expands the functions of the service areas to meet the needs of difference groups of people which include leisure, display and exhibition, leisure agriculture, logistics. By use of practical examples, this paper deeply analyzes design features and diversification by resorting to the foregoing summary of design theory, and provides a reference for the future service area design. Finally, this paper gives a conclusion and future prospects. |
