With the intensification of competition in the field of the global manufacturing market, the high-quality, low cost products can be developed and produced in the shortest time is the goal for each enterprise. Computer is used for assembly process planning, assembly sequence reasoning to ensure the feasibility and optimality in the actual assembly process. It's of great significance to further improve product quality and shorten production cycle. The emergence of virtual assembly technology provides a powerful support for the realization of product design, the parallel work of process and assembly.In the late 80s of twentieth century, the manufacturing level is further enhanced by the concurrent engineering with integration process; In the 90s, with the development of the advanced manufacturing technology, new concept of virtual manufacturing, lean manufacturing, agile manufacturing, and virtual enterprise are emerged.Virtual assembly is one of the core technology of virtual manufacturing, which is through computer simulation of component assembly in the design process of product process, to check the correct assembly relationship between components, including accessibility, sequence, directional, the interference and tolerance with the other aspects. The realization of virtual assembly contribute to solve technical problems existed from the design to product, to shorten product development cycle, reduce production costs and optimize product performance other purposes.In this paper, the process planning techniques for virtual assembly are studied. Based on the study on assembly process planning in home and abroad, the platform of CATIA V5R17 is used to build a three-dimensional solid model of the instrument panel. In the virtual assembly process of the product, check whether the interference is existed in the process of assembling, if there is interference to identify ways to eliminate and improve. Products implement the virtual assembly in the computer, to detect the design flaws early, to reduce rework and the changing number, to make a design for assembly, so the idea of concurrent engineering can be better reflected. Research of assembly process planning technology in virtual environment is of great significance for developing virtual technology.
