Symmetrical structure was one of the visual presentations of road information in road traffic signs. The research explored the influence of symmetrical information presentation on operational performance by the delayed matching tasks first, then analyzed the factors of symmetrical structure effect, and finally studied the cognitive mechanisms of symmetrical structure effect. In this study there were six experiments in three phases. In phase one the experiment one confirmed the information symmetrical structure effect in road traffic signs. In phase two the research explored respectively the whole factor (layout) and the partial factors (information capacity, information font, information color) that affect the symmetrical structure effect by experiment 2, experiment 3, experiment 4 and experiment 5. In phase three the experiment six studied cognitive mechanism of the symmetry effect in information structure of road traffic signs by the eye movement mode research. In addition, we proposed several interface design principles based on the experimental studies. The experiment results showed the following conclusions.1. The operation performance of road information was significantly improved by presentation of symmetrical structure in road traffic signs. It meant there was symmetrical structure effect.2. It made no difference to operation performance of traffic signs whether the layout was rectangle or circularity.3. The information capacity affected the operation performance of traffic signs and there was symmetry effect in structure as was presented between six and ten.4. It made no difference to operation performance of traffic signs whether the road information font was SimHei, SimSun or KaiTi.5. The visual search performance of traffic signs was improved when the road information was blue with white background. 6. When the asymmetrical structure was employed, the number of fixation, gaze time and the number of regression in were less than when the symmetrical structure was used.
