Traffic signs are the most important traffic facilities in urban roads,which provide the information and guide the right direction for road users.Their design and setting are directly related to traffic safety and efficiency.However,with the continuous development of urban roads,traffic signs continue to expose the problems.Especially,traffic accidents occur frequently due to the information overload of traffic signs.In the past,the study on the information overload problem of traffic signs mainly focuses on the single traffic sign without thinking about lots of traffic signs setting up in the same plane.At this point the emergence of information overload problem is more prominent.Therefore,it is particularly important to solve such traffic problem.In this context,this paper studies the following based on experimental verification and theoretical analysis:First,classification studies are conducted on a single traffic sign based on cognitive psychology.The guiding,warnings,bans,auxiliary signs and other 42 traffic signs used on the urban road in the national standard "road traffic signs and marking" are carried out to the visual experiment,in order to calculate and analyze the visual time of the each traffic sign respectively.In the case of driver's driving age,gender and other factors,clustering analysis is performed by K-S test and single factor variance test,which divides the traffic signs into 5 categories based on the visual time.Second,threshold information studies are conducted on a variety of traffic signs based on driving simulation experiments.On the basis of qualitative and quantitative analysis,respectively,the relationships and impacts are studied on the five types of traffic signs in different combinations of circumstances.A variety of traffic signs threshold information is conducted by the method of visualization.The relationship among 5 kinds of traffic signs can be also identified.The study shows that when the guiding sign is combined with other signs,there are no more than 4 types.When the 4 types of traffic signs in the combination of settings,the information relationship is 1: 1.4: 1.6: 2.The study also finds that when the visual time of the same traffic sign is shorter in combined setting compared to in a single setting.Third,the assessment of the effectiveness studies are conducted on the traffic signs based on analytic hierarchy process.The analytic hierarchy is used to determine the familiarity,specificity,simplicity,meaning expression,language proximity of the traffic signs as the evaluation index.The effectiveness of the assessment system is buildt where 5 kinds of traffic signs are setted in the same plane.The evaluation coefficients of various traffic signs are calculated by Boolean matrix,which can evaluate the validity of traffic signs.The evaluation results show that the importance of 5 kinds of traffic signs is the guiding sign,prohibiting right turn sign,limiting speed 40 sign,parking sign and lane driving direction sign.This study provides a reference for the combination design of multiple traffic signs,offers the theoretical support and technical reserve for the revision of relevant standards,which has a great significance to improve the traffic safety level and travel efficiency.
