In recent years, the fast-growing construction industry has become an important part to promote national economic development in China. The Chinese government's four-trillion economic stimulus plan and major international events held, such as 2008 Beijing Olympic Games,2010 World Expo Shanghai and 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, that has promoted the development of the construction industry rapidly. A large number of new buildings which are unique-shape, large-scale and complex-structure stand in our land as the trend of the times. However, the contridiction between the rapid development of the construction industry and the safety of structure shouldn't be neglected. Engineering accidents are common around us. Structure health monitoring technology as an effective means can evaluate the true state of the structure, and effectively prevent the occurrence of engineering accidents. It is of great engineering significance.Based on the national 863 project which is "the disaster warning of large-span spacial structure under complex environment", this paper introduces the structure health monitoring research of the UK pavilion in the construction and operation at Expo Shanghai. It understands the operational status of the structure, and develops an information management system which provides a strong guarantee for the safe use of the structure. It also realizes the sharing of monitoring information and the visualization of monitoring results.Firstly, the existing monitoring methods were introduced systematically. It summarized and compared the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of strain monitoring, vibration monitoring and deformation monitoring in their respective fields from the technical principles and practical. Combined with the actual situation of the engineering, it chooses the appropriate method of structure monitoring of the UK pavilion. The strain and vibration monitoring system is based on wireless sensor technology which is developed by our rearch group, and deformation monitoring system is developed by Leica Corporation. The both of monitoring systems are discussed in the paper.Secondly, with the monitoring equipments and systems that are introduced above, the forces, dynamic response and geometric distortion of structure are dynamically monitored in the construction and operation. And then, it compares the measured and theoretical values, which reveals the operational status of the structure, and provides a strong guarantee for the safe use of the structure during the Expo.At last, it develops an information management system which serves for structure health monitoring of the UK pavilion. The system is based on WEB network platform, and use database technology to manage a large number of data which is collected during a long-term monitoring scientifically and rationally. It also realizes the data show in the form of tables and curves, and creates a platform of information exchange for the staff.
