In all types of structural design of building, in addition to meeting the strength calculation, the walls and columns also need for high-thickness ratio check. The checking of masonry structure wall height-thickness ratio is an important structure measures to ensure the normal use. There is no demand of deformation in "Masonry Design Code" to ensure the normal use so it uses the height-thickness ratio instead. By means of controling the overlarge height-thickness ratio to limit the deformation under the normal load, the checking is very effective in practical engineering structural design, though it is not very precise. The height- thickness ratio limit of "Masonry Design Code" is mainly based on the practice and the experience of China and the reference to some provisions of the international set. Now they have been somewhat conservative and backward. In order to revise the "Masonry Design Code," and provide a theoretical basis for the stability of new wall materials, in this paper, through the basic knowledge of mechanics to research the mechanical properties of the wall , it will provide a theoretical calculation basis for the stability of the wall under normal use.The paper is based on the theory of stability to research the method for determining the height- thickness ratio limit of walls and columns. It studies the height- thickness ratio limit theory in both the case of axial compression and the case of not considering the impact of a certain eccentric early. In addition, it considers the effect of accidental impact and discusses the method for determining the height- thickness ratio limit of walls and columns under the effect of axial force and horizontal concentrated force, then gives the theoretical formula. With the help of a large-scale general-purpose finite element analysis software - ABAQUS finite element analysis to simulate and calculate the stability of the wall, it analysis the deformation of the wall under the external force and the relationship between them. The high-thickness ratio limits in the "Masonry Structure Design Code" are about the common clay brick. The high-thickness ratio limit requirement of a number of new wall materials and the special circumstances is not given. Through comparison and application , this paper research some special wall and new wall material high-thickness ratio limit and gives the calculation method and the theoretical basis for the wall.At present, the independent brick columns have been rarely seen in the design of masonry structures and there is no difference on mechanical behavior between walls and columns, so this paper considers the height-thickness ratio limit of walls and columns should be the same.
