In the historic view, the codes for concrete design have been developing as the time goes. The method based on the extreme stress has been evolved into the limit state method based on the possibility theorem. At the worldwide aspect, the codes made by developed countries are more severe and reasonable, such as the USA codes and the European codes which supply a whole system of codes for construction of buildings. It is known to all that European code is one of the most advanced codes. In the purpose of study and refering of the codes, and developing a Eurocode version of PKPM software, some research work on the European concrete design code has been done and some programs for RC elements design have been developed in this paper. On the basis of calculation and analysis, comparison of the European and Chinese code has also been carried out in this paper.Firstly, a procedure for RC structural design was established. The principles and expressions of the limit state design for both Eurocode and Chinese code are introduced and summarized. According to the process of design, the values of different kinds of loads, the combinations of loads effects and requirements for the materials are given in proper order.Secondly, Detailed methods for the calculation of RC elements were drawn out. The design methods for normal section and oblique section are specified both with and without the demands of earthquake resistance protection. Based on the studied of some items of the Eurocode and the Chinese code, the expressions of normal cross section strength design for European code are concluded according to the national annex of Great Britain. The expressions and influenced factors are analyzed for the calculation of oblique section strength design and compared with Chinese code. Meanwhile, the principles for the anti-seismic design under the earthquake conditions have been focused in this paper. For three kinds of ductility-Ductility High, Medium, Low-the discussed, and these demands are all included in the program at the same time.Thirdly, the flow charts and the program for calculation of RC elements were developed. The reinforcements for the beams and walls are calculated by the formula directly, and the reinforcement quantities of short columns are computed by iterative calculation considering the eccentricity. Also, the requirements and adjusts for anti-seismic are included in the programs.Through the study work of this paper, the Eurocode for concrete structure are understood thoroughly and the calculating programs are developed. It is a main and important work for the developing of Eurocode version of PKPM software. By comparison study between European code and Chinese code, the differences in the strength of the materials, the design expressions, and anti-seismic are found.. Depending on the calculation and analysis, some usefull conclusions are given out for referencing of Eurocode in structural design and Chinese code drafting.
