The main purpose of camouflage is to minimize feature differences between the target and the background in the optical, thermal infrared, radar and other aspects. Camouflage is mainly used to improve the use value of various types of equipment and to protect themselves. On the battlefield, whether in front, behind or depth of battlefield, any bad disguise may be found by detection, and these targets once been found will have danger of attack.In the past, camouflage spots depends mainly on the experience of designers. Spots formed smooth curve, such camouflage spots is not match background and objectives and the camouflage effect is debased. So camouflage designed on the original methods and ideas is very necessary to improve. New technologies and ideas should have an objective analysis of the characteristics of background. Characteristics should include main background color, configuration and distribution of spots, according to characteristics to design camouflage, to make it better fusion with the background characteristics.In this paper, the design method of camouflage spots is researched by analyzing the different typical background and extracting the target's background characteristics. This paper focuses on the three different types of typical background:mountains, jungles and desert background. For mountain background, it quantizes the colors of the background and extracts the dominant colors, followed that reduces the colors of the background to the dominant colors, finally extracts the edge of the image of background by parallel operator. There are two methods to design camouflage spots for forest:The first is improvements of algorithm of mountain; The second is the use of region growing methods. Desert background can design camouflage spots by threshold according its unique background. Then this algorithm provides connection and other post-processing. The program also provides evaluation of subjective and objective aspects. Experimental results show that the proposed extraction method in this paper greatly improves the design efficiency, improves quality of camouflage spots, as well as reduces design cost. As a result, camouflage spots designed by the new algorithm is easier to blend with the natural background.
