At present, smart grid has attracted worldwide attention and becomed the core content of China power grid modernization. As the link between power generation and users, the operational data acquisition and command execution unit, substation is one basement and supporting power for the strong smart grid. What's more, smart substation will run through the whole process of smart grid construction in order to satisfy the requirement of smart grid. Smart substation secondary system and electronic current transformer as the core content of smart substations has important practical significance for smart grid construction.This paper first briefly summarized the basic situation of electromagnetic current transformer, summed up the development course of transformer, pointed out the advantages of electronic current transformer, separately gived a detailed explanation about the working principle and structural of active and passive electronic current transformer. The basic properties of 3 different types of electronic current transformer are compared, which are Rogowski coil current transformer, optical current transformer, optical fiber current transformer. Secondly, this paper studyed on the application of electronic current transformer of smart substations, such as the basic requirements for electronic current transformer, several key points in the application of electronic current transformer and the influence on the smart substation. Finally, from the comprehensive consideration about protection, measurement and communications aspects, this paper established the whole optimization structure of smart substation secondary system, which includes the protection configuration optimization scheme and measurement configuration optimization scheme two parts, and the current program of smart substation network structure.
