This dissertation stared from the practical investigation of West Henan Shan County District underground Pit Kiln Houses situations, mainly discussed the overall pit kiln houses in two aspects of cultural and spiritual values within the investigation scope, pointed out the question of building protection and development of pit kiln houses in reality. However, in the first place, preserving the unique and charming vernacular architecture is the most urgent task. The dissertation focused on two aspects of "research" and "protection", analyzed the existence value and problems of pit kiln houses through the summarizing investigation of West Henan Shan County District underground Pit Kiln Houses, and tried to put forward some feasible protection recommendations of Pit Kiln House to help the county pit kiln House to develop better. The structure of this dissertation can be divided into the following five chapters:The first chapter is an introduction, which briefly described the research background, purpose, significance, research status at home and abroad, research ideas and overview of study object.The second chapter explained the natural conditions, historical and geographical overview of West Henan Shan County District underground Pit Kiln Houses with emphasis on construction characteristics of Pit Kiln Houses, introduced natural, historical and social background of the emergence of Pit Kiln Houses through the above discussion and provided arguments for he back part of the research.The third chapter is the part of practical research, emphasizing data and analysis of survey results. The survey covered almost the major of most western Henan Shan County District underground Pit Kiln Houses, including the overall investigation about the village situation, the village environment survey and village formation survey, village state survey, the size of residential buildings and the quality of residential village survey, resident opinion survey and residential village problems survey. Through data analysis and sorting, the root cause of the decline of Pit Kiln Houses was found out that the traditional way of life can not suit to contemporary state of rural development.The fourth chapter analyzed the existence value of pit kiln houses on the basis of data in the previous chapter, of which the most important value are in three aspects: structure value, cultural value and ecological value.
