ROPS is a steel structural system which installs outside the engineering vehicle cabs. When vehicles have accidents such as rolling, ROPS can keep drivers in safety and reduce the loss of life and property as much as possible. As the exports of construction vehicles increase and the international security performance requirements improve, construction vehicles which are to enter the international market must equip with qualified ROPS. Therefore, domestic vehicle manufacturers in various engineering and scientific research institutions should improve the security structure of the engineering vehicle cabs and pave the way for international export of domestic construction vehicles by international safety certification obtained from structural testing of the corresponding security. Under the guidance of this thinking, this paper carried out experimental and theoretical study of ROPS and its main contents are as follows.1. Nonlinear finite element model of large wheel loader ROPS has been established by elastic-plastic mechanics theory as a foundation. Based on the international standards ISO 3471《Moving Machinery—overturned protection structure lab tests and performance requirements》and《Moving Machinery—the laboratory identification's protecting structure—Extremely limited regulations. Torsion》, the finite element analysis has been finished.2. According to the above international standards, the real test of ROPS and FOPS for large wheel loader has been made, which is used to verify whether the product meets the requirements of international standards or not. By comparing data of finite element analysis and that of real test, the results show that the established finite element analysis is reasonable and nonlinear analysis of ROPS is accurate. At the same time, the failure mechanism of ROPS and the key issues to design ROPS have been obtained through the experimental study.
