With the development of economic and technical theory, smart grid and micro nets are becoming a new research direction for scientific researchers. Especially DGS (Distributed Generation System) which needs little investment, small unit capacity and flexible electric power generation gradually become one of effective way to suffice load growth, enhance the utilization efficiency of energy resources and power distribution reliability. Because of the small unit capacity of DGS, the capacity of exciter is also small, thus it is significant to do researches on small and medium-sized excitation system. Based on this, the author researches on excitation controller, and the traditional controlled rectifier bridge is replaced by uncontrolled rectifier bridge and DC chopper. Not only is it useable for servicing, but also it does not need severe three-phase sequence control.Besides favorable qualification and reliability, excitation controller should have eximious communication system and friendly man-machine interface. It could be compactly display system status information and receive or send the order of monitoring system. With the development of power system automation, digital control technology and computer electronic technology, a lot of new microcontrollers were adopted as the core of excitation, for instance single-chip processor, digital signal processor and so on. The application of these microcontrollers not only enhanced the system performance, but also made it possible to expend many communication function.This paper studies the application of communication function in an excitation controller based on LM3S818. It detailedly introduce hardware design and complete the design of the man-machine interface. Finally the communication function is realized. This paper introduces the communication function detailedly, so it is useful for the development of other communication system based on ARM.
