| The traditional maintenance management method can not meet power supply enterprises'needs for high reliability and low operating cost. The development of microelectronics, computer technology and communication technology makes it possible to apply condition-based maintenance to the protection relay equipments. Smart grid is becoming the goal of power system development. The protection relay systems have to meet the needs of smart grid development to guarantee a more strong, more secure and self-healing power grid to avoid severe power outages. This requires better maintenance management of protection relay equipments. Learning from domestic and oversea maintenance management theory and practice, depending on technological progress and management innovation to realize the protection relay system condition-based maintenance is an urgent issue to be solved by power supply enterprises.Taking protection relay system of the Datong EHV Transmission Company as the research object and ensuring the safe operation of the equipments as the first principle, maintenance management status and problems of the protection relay systems were analyzed and a failure modes and effects analysis on protecting relay systems was made. Based on this analysis, the state detective methods of relay systems were studied and a statistical method for protection relay system condition-based maintenance based on protection equipment's own characteristics was put forward, solving the difficult problems of how to quantify the protection relay status and how to obtain sample data of operational equipments. Using Enterprise Asset Management as a software platform, we achieved the functions of the protection relay equipment condition assessment, equipment reliability level evaluation and classification, and providing equipment maintenance strategies. It rises up the company's protective relays life-cycle management level, and the condition based maintenance is ultimately achieved.
