Since the microprocessor-based protection equipment which towards intelligence is widely used, the routine normal periodic test system is no longer fit. So the status maintenance to be applied to the protective equipment is imperative.This paper discusses the necessity and present situation of. status maintenance of electric equipments. It studies on the feasibility of status maintenance for relay protection. It suggests the hardware compositions of status maintenance for relay protection and the evaluation of state variable access method. The author puts forward the process of status maintenance for relay protection. It starts from the collection of information, analyses the data structure, studies the functions of fault diagnosis technology, computer-aided decision-making system and risk assessment and detection of the decision-making system. Starting from the reliability of microcomputer relay protection equipments, it introduces the self-test coefficient, maintenance success factor and breakdown maintenance coefficient of equipments. Based on the present,advice about a management mode is proposed.This paper has important theoretical significance and practical value on guiding the normal operation of relay protection equipment that will protect the power grid equipment operating safely and reliably.
