With the vehicle speed increasing in modern traffic, the traffic accident frequency and severity of accidents has been significantly higher. The safety performance of road is an important factor of safe driving, which has caught more and more attention to the relevant departments. Road safety performance is evaluated through the skid resistance of road, and the friction coefficient to evaluate the skid resistance is the most important indicators, so accurate and efficient detection and evaluation of road surface friction coefficient is essential. However, at present the detection of road surface friction coefficient using lateral force coefficient is only limited to the detection method, detection of longitudinal force coefficient there are some questions and not be included in specifications; and the international standard which provides the detection of road surface friction coefficient can either use the lateral force coefficient or use the longitudinal force coefficient, but did not clearly articulated the relationship between the two detection methods, which brings some difficulties to comparison of results obtained using different detection methods. This paper is from this current situation show that the longitudinal force coefficient can also be a good evaluation of pavement skid resistance, and both theory and experiment to find out the relationship between the coefficient of lateral force and the longitudinal force coefficient, so that the surface resistance sliding performance could evaluate system more perfect. This paper discusses the friction between tire and road formation mechanism, and the factors affecting the specific analysis of the tire as the lateral and longitudinal forces based on. Analysis of friction coefficient test method and test principle and the parameters of the tire and the ground is how they affect the tire lateral force and longitudinal force size. According to the interaction principles between tire and the ground, know that lateral force less than the longitudinal force from theoretical analysis, and when the tire slip angle reaches a certain value, a maximum lateral force could be obtained; from tire deformation the size of the lateral force and longitudinal force are calculated, the lateral force obtained is less than the tire longitudinal force, and the maximum lateral force to achieve possible is equal to the tire longitudinal force under the same conditions by the conclusion. Finally, old asphalt pavement and new asphalt paved road surface are detected by use of the pendulum friction coefficient tester and by the analysis of experimental data we can obtain the follows:the longitudinal pendulum swing value of road is greater than the lateral pendulum swing value, and there is a certain relationship between the new road longitudinal and lateral swing value. So that in our country, the longitudinal force coefficient can also be used as the evaluation of road surface friction coefficient, and to determine the relationship between the tire longitudinal force and lateral force is conducive to improve the pavement skid resistance evaluation system. When necessary, the testing equipment should be developed which can detect the longitudinal force coefficient and the lateral force coefficient.
