The M2S body structure of the CRH5 EMU is widened and designed in this paper. The structural strength and dynamic characteristics of the widened M2S body is analyzed. In addition, the structure of the layout and bottom of the widened body is also optimized. The main contents of the paper are as the follows:1. According to the demand of the train limitation and the principles of body structure design, the M2S body structure of the CRH5 EMU is wide-bodied designed.2. Considering that widened body structure is complex, the structure is simplified according to the body characteristics. And FE model is built.3. According to the standard EN 12663, the widened body structure of the first plan is calculated and analyzed under the ten load cases. The influence of the body strength and stiffness is analyzed under the action of the different load cases. And the influence of the varied body width on the body structure is also analyzed. Finally, the plan of the body wideness is acquired. And the plan is feasible.4. Model analysis of the widened CRH5 M2S.body is calculated. The vibration frequencies and modes under both no-load state and full load state of the whole vehicle are obtained in the modal analysis. Their first band vertical bending frequencies are greater than those of the old CRH5 M2S body. And is also more than lOHz, which is the body frame frequency to avoid resonance of the body structure with the body frame. Therefore, the wideness of the body is feasible from the model.5. The widened M2S body structure is designed and optimized with the OptiStruct in this paper. The weight of the widened vehicle body is set as the objective function. The thickNess of the structure member is set as the variable and the stress and displacement of the body frame are set as constraints. Finally, the optimum results of the widened body are verified with the ANSYS.The results of this study provide the preliminary theory basis for the design of the widened EMU vehicles. And they also have references value for the optimization f the widened EMU vehicles. In addition, a new direction of the structure design for EMU trains is offered.
