The situation of international oil market is increasingly nervous. Marine fuel prices are instability. The consciousness of environment protection is strengthened increasingly. Modern society put forward higher request for shipping industry. International shipping companies are actively looking for a new way of energy conservation and emissions reduction, increasing concerns and devotion of renewable and clean energy applying to the vessel. Developing renewable energy has become a trend.Wind power has widely distributed, infinite renewable advantages, relative to other clean energy. Wind energy used in ship propulsion has a long history, and wing sail used as the auxiliary power plants on small vessels is mature technology. The sail-assisted technology has drawn the attention of people again, but the technology is rarely applied to large ocean shipping. The research of this aspect appears especially far-reaching significance. In this topic research, the aerodynamic performance of existing wing sails is studied systematically, And on this basis, the simulation and research of sail-assisted power plants is completed to provide certain reference for the research of dynamic and economy on sail-assisted ship. The mainly study contents of this paper is divided into four parts. Above all, the existing types of sail are collected and sorted. The different types of sail are comprehensively compared, through three aspects, that the structure, aerodynamic performance and complexity of automatic control, then choosing the proper type. The next, from the theory of airfoil, the working principle of wing sail is analyzed, and the main factors affecting the aerodynamic performance of wing sail, such as plane shape, aspect ratio, section form, camber ratio etc, are analyzed and researched. Furthermore, selecting the target ship, and analyzing the history meteorological of typical routes statistically. According to the stability of the target ship, the main sizes of wing sail are designed to obtain the maximum thrust. Then, determining the layout forms on the vessel, and completing the match calculation on power plants of sail-assisted ship. Finally, according to the aerodynamics theory, the mathematical model of the wing sail is established. Mathematical model on the traditional Marine power plant are improved. Simulation models are established in Simulink, completing simulation studies, and analyzing the simulation results.
