Nowadays, small engine has been widely used as power source in mechanical industry, which makes it very important to study about its performance. The testing of effective power of small engine is a prominent process of the research to better its working result, therefore, constant study and research bears a tremendous meaning to meet the need of varies situations.This passage introduces a brief status about the research of the power testing unit, both foreign and domestic. Moreover, based on the analysis and different kinds of the power testing unit and of current situation of our school, I provided a new design of the portable testing system of engine power based on the theory of eddy current. It has some characteristic such as:simple structure, compact size, easy installation, high precision, good price and so on.First of all, I come up with an overall design of the power testing unit, including the design of rattler and the testing method selection of revolving speed, toque, fuel consumption. These all together provide the general thought for the subsequent design.Secondly, through the study of electromagnetic theory, I worked out the computational formula of absorbed power and brake moment, and with the key parameter of absorbed power attained, the testing sample machine of portable-power-absorption unit; is produced.Finally, I designed and built a checking system to make sure the result of the machine is correct. It validated the rationality of the test and carried out a series of rating test, including the experiments about the relationship of revolving speed and toque, current and torque and the temperature of rotor, etc. Through the research of the mentioned experiments, the essential data to provide the needed validation of the improvement of engine efficiency is available.
