Lightning is a kind of strong electric discharge process in atmosphere, whenever and wherever occur upon earth. It is very harmful to the computer network and other electronic information system which is closely related to the modern society. With the social development in recent years, the government increased its investment in highway infrastructure. Highway showing a rapid growth trend. Highway toll stations are generally located in flat outskirts unit, with no tall buildings around them. With the development of intelligent highway toll systems, advanced electronics and information devices are widely used in highway charging system. There are many weaknesses in electronic information, such as the low equipment insulation strength, poor over-voltage and over-current tolerance, sensitive to electromagnetic interference and so on, which are vulnerable to lightning interference and hazards. Therefore, it is forward higher update request and challenges to lightning protection technology for highway. Tianjin highway network is one of the important part of the national high-speed road network. Since put into operation, it experienced many times of lightning damage with varied degrees, especially a lightning accident happened in Jinjing highway toll station on June 16,2009, which result in a large area paralysis of charge system and severely affected the normal operation of charge work. This lightning accident is very typical, which was the most serious one and made most extensive damage to the equipments in all of the lightning accident of Tianjin highway toll station. Therefore, this study investigated this lightning accident through surveying tollbooth geographic location, collection of related weather and lightning positioning system monitoring data, focusing on the factors leading to the lightning accident and made a lightning disaster risk assessment to the station. And finally, the feasible method to reduce the risk of the lightning toll has been discussed to reducing accidents by lightning.
