With the development of intelligent transportation systems in China, as the basis of the ITS the real-time traffic data of urban traffic system plays an important role. As the domestic and international research show,the information detected by the traffic detector determines the effectiveness of ITS, while the positions and density of detectors relate to its veracity and actual effect., recently the research of detectors optimal layout is discussed by midsize city and large urban in China.. because of the high amount of urban road networks, if as we wish every section of networks is laid detector idealistically, however its cost would be amazing. Therefore, we can not only obtain a traffic data which is given accuracy and integrity,but detectors can also be laid as few as possible on the networks, that is very important decorating for traffic data acquisition system.Based on the present situation of domestic and abroad research on urban transportation information acquisition system, at first, analysis and comparison on principles, characteristics and fitting conditions of commonly used traffic detectors are given, then the actual condition and goal need to be considered when choosing detectors. Basic principles of the commonly used traffic detector optimal layout methods are reviewed comprehensively, then compares their characteristics application conditions. urban roads are classified into urban expressway and general urban road two categories whose optimal layout methods are discussed respectively. Combined with the characteristics of expressway a optimal layout method based on travel time estimations selected, and city road network traffic detector actual optimization of urban expressway is simulated by VISSIM4.10 which is for microscopic simulation, an optimal scheme can be obtained. Combining basing on OD estimation matrix layout method and traffic flow estimation a method based on genetic algorithm is put forward. And its effectiveness is tested by engineering computing software MATLAB. On this basis, genetic algorithm is used to obtain several layout results,if the number of the detectors is less than that is given in advance, stop computing or Similarity analysis on the results obtained above should be given to reduce the number of the sections detected. until getting the most suitable result. Then a project is given which contains urban express way and general urban road network.
