Intelligent transportation system (ITS) makes use of advanced electron and information technology. It is composed of new-style triune highway traffic system of personnel, highway and vehicle. Intelligent transportation system aims at abating traffic congestion, reducing traffic accident, and increasing road user's convenience and comfort. It represents the developmental orientation of roadway and traffic.This thesis studies emphatically on the traffic detector of intelligent transportation system. We designed the loop induction detector which overcome shortcoming of the single loop detection of speed measurement by using double loop detection technology. When vehicle goes through the loop, the traffic detectors gather the data of oscillation frequency and complete classification of vehicle types by analyze the difference of frequency characteristics. The classification statistics of road vehicle can be obtained in time. The design of traffic detector provides a new thinking and method for intelligent transportation system.This thesis describes theory model of loop detection technology and proof the theory's correctness and feasibility by application. It spends a minor time for vehicles go across single loop, while the system should response fast and accurately. This system makes use of ARM7 microprocessor and EPM3256 that have high-powered process ability and large storage space. The idea of equal precision frequency measuring is used in vehicle detector. Compared with frequency measure method that is adopted by traditional detecting products, the system's stability under poor working conditions and the detection accuracy is greatly improving. The design of hardware and software of this detector is given.We designed the loop induction detector which is based on ARM7 and equal precision frequency measuring method, not only improve the detection accuracy, but also provides a reliable foundation for applying to next practice.
