Recently years, with the development of China electric power industry, researches of power system became more and more focus on the issues of reactive power compensation. As well as active power, reactive power, which can reduced network loss and enhanced the safety of power system operation, is also one of the most important parts in electric power system. And if three phase reactive power in electric network became unbalance, the system voltage will fluctuated immensely, which will resulted in electric equipments damaged and even system voltage collapsed. Reactive power is a necessary thing when establishing electromagnetic field. However, with active power maintained stability, more reactive power in power system will result in more disadvantage, such as power factor deduced, apparent power increased, higher demand of electric equipments capacity, more cost in operation, and so on. At the same time, large voltage drop, caused by too much reactive power exist in power system, is disadvantage in power transmission. Owing to these demerits, people became using different kinds of compensation equipments to ensure the reactive power can be controlled in acceptable level.In urban network, the issues, such as large differences of network loads peak-valley and high frequency of network loads instantaneous change, demanded the reactive power compensation of network should quickly, accurately and reliably to ensure the safety and stability of power system. Thus, in this paper, different kinds of reactive power compensation methods were discussed to find an optimization way to compensate reactive power in urban network.In this paper, the situation of reactive compensation development was firstly presented. And then, based on urban network, the merits and demerits of each reactive compensation method were discussed. Finally, based on Shanghai network, optimization reactive compensation method was presented. And according to the optimal method, a simulation model was built to demonstrate that the network power quality can be improved greatly by compensating effective reactive power.In this paper,the things we made it is:(1) Design the compensate reactive strategies of Shanghai urban network.(2) Select a power station in Shanghai to accomplish The VQC optimization strategy.(3) Research the advanced compensate reactive strategies of Shanghai urban network by Genetic Algorithm and PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization). Verification the Efficiency of the advanced compensate reactive strategies by the calculation result.(4) According to the 24hs dynamic load and comparing the calculation result made by Genetic Algorithm with made by PSO, and to find which is more suitable to the compensate reactive strategies of Shanghai urban network.
