With the development of intelligent buildings, its increasing functions require more and more sensors for environmental monitoring. Monitoring system building with wired sensor network has a large quantity of wiring,a high cost, and a poor reliability, and can not wiring in some places.It can no longer meet the needs. Compared to wired sensor networks, the wireless sensor monitoring network system has easy installation, high flexibility, and low costs.It has a better prospect of using in intelligent building envionmental monitoring.The ZigBee is a new, wireless short-range communication standard which is very low cost, very low power consumption and very low data rate. So the design develops a way to build intelligent building envionmental monitoring system with ZigBee for providing a more intelligent, more comfortable and more security environment.Under the precondition of the application in intelligent building service, this paper firstly analyzes and compares the advantages and disadvantages between traditional wire network and several popular related short-ranged wireless technology standards, and thinks that ZigBee is more suitable for intelligent building system. After deeply analyzing the ZigBee standard including the structure and function of each communication protocol layers, cluster net topology is choosed to construct the monitoring system.As for the design in this study, two highlights are novel and important. One is the data collection of senor nodes; the other is the network building with ZigBee. This design uses TI's single-chip CC2430 and low-power amplifier CC2591 solution to realize the function of this system.The hardware design of this paper is a modular one, thus the system includes wireless transmission module and sensor node module. There are two kinds of network devices: environment devices (temperature sensor, humid sensor and light strengths sensor etc) and safe-guard devices (theft monitoring module and human monitoring module etc) respectively. ZigBee protocol is researched and reduced ZigBee protocol stack is modified and planted based on the standards defined by ZigBee Alliance. The energy-saving is achieved by mechanisms of threshold-values trigger and node sleeping. The design realizes the ZigBee cluster-style network, which has lots of functions such as automatically forming network and dynamically joining the network.Final hardware test of this system shows that these ZigBee modules have stabilized communication which can meet the needs. The test results indicate that depending on low-power nodes this system can meet the requirement of long time stable working monitoring network system, which is intelligent and costs low, consumes low power. Hope it is helpful for other application with ZigBee.
