Intelligent substation as a part of the smart grid, it is a bridge which connected the power generation and consumption side, it is very important to the whole power system to keep the substation operate safety, stably, and reliably. With the transformation and upgrading of traditional substation, many disadvantages of the traditional substation highlights, not in line with the development of smart grid direction, the future development of the substation should be clean, safe, economical and friendly. The environment factors in the substation are complicated and changeable, how to collect, transfer, analyze and deal with the environmental parameters of the team in time and accurately, which directly affects the safe and stable operation of the substation. In this paper, by analysising the design demands of Smart Substation environment monitoring subsystem, and compare the disadvantages of substation monitoring system with the traditional transformer, combined with background of the rapid development of the wireless sensor network now, design a system about substation monitoring system based on ZigBee. Through designing the hardware and software of each node, finally the system for simulation test and discuss the wireless network in Smart Substation is the use of real-time, reliability and safety of data transmission and eventually raised expectations and insufficient.The main contents of this paper and the innovation points are as follows:1. Brief introduction of structure and function of intelligent substation and communication standard, etc. Intelligent substation logically can be divided into three layer structure which is the station control layer, spacer layer, and process layer. then analyzes the monitoring sub-system of intelligent substation, and analysis of environmental monitoring system requirement of smart substation, to prove the necessity of the system.2. The wireless sensor network are introduced, analysis of common Wireless Sensor Network,select wireless solutions of system design; finally, choice of low power consumption, low rate, easy networking ZigBee network system as wireless solutions of system design by comparing with other WSN.3. In the aspect of hardware, design the coordinator node, the router nodes, terminal nodes and cc2591 RF circuit, level conversion circuit power, system power supply circuit, RS232 serial interface circuit; in software using IAR EW and Z-stack protocol to design the system nodes and login interface, system interface.4. Testing the system, including system node communication distance and system function testing, finally discusses the electromagnetic compatibility between ZigBee communication module and the substation equipment. And discuss the reliability of system.System testing results show that the system designed in this paper can not only implementation acquisition and monitoring the intelligent substation real-time environment data,but also can warn of non-normal situation, which achieve the design goals of system.
