Vehicle simulator is a simulation device that can simulate the driving behavior vividly providing the same environment as the real car do. It can be used to test the on-board equipment, train drivers, reproduce the driving conditions which are impossible in reality, and also used to study the influences caused by tiredness and medicine. Based on vehicle dynamics and virtual reality technology, the vehicle dynamic simulation software of vehicle simulator studies vehicle's dynamic performance and does driving simulation. The software can act as the interface of the vehicle simulator during its early design period, to verify the theory before the hardware is designed. Thus, not only reduces development cost and shorten development cycle, but also provides a bright future in producing low cost vehicle simulator.Considering the practical application of vehicle simulator, this paper firstly analyzed the function of the software and chose the operational environment and developing tool. Then the developing process was set. Thirdly, the vehicle dynamic models were built using Simulink and Vortex, the development of the virtual visual simulation system together with its key technologies was studied. Then followed was the verification of the real time property of the communication by applying UDP/IP protocol. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the two different methods for realizing the function of vehicle simulator were discussed.This system taking Visual C++ as software development platform to accomplish the design of vehicle dynamic simulation software of vehicle simulator, by using Multigen Creator to build 3D models and Vega to create virtual simulation real time application in combination with the vehicle models built in Simulink and Vortex. Method one taking the Simulink vehicle dynamic model as the core, separated model solution and graphics rendering by using xPC Target. The communication was achieved by applying UDP/IP protocol. The other method took advantage of the powerful physical engine of Vortex to implement the simulation function. At last, the functional test was carried out.The design turned out to be successful. The software can simulate driving motion in the virtual scene to some degree. The software can be helpful to validate the vehicle dynamic models and can be referenced when developing other vehicle simulator.
